The Sarasota Marathon is pleased to announce its beneficiaries of the 2008 ABC 7 Sarasota Marathon.
The focus charity, Foundation for Dreams, began in 1996 while the founder, Eddie Mulock, was recovering from heart transplant surgery at the University of Florida. Since 2001, The Foundation for Dreams and Dream Oaks Camp's mission has been to provide fun, educational, and recreational experiences in an outdoor camp environment to enhance the lives of children ages 7-17 with physical and developmental disabilities and serious illnesses. Offering day and weekend residential camp during the school year and week long residential camp during the summer, The Foundation serves children from Florida's west coast and throughout the state. "As a runner myself, I am happy to bring two of my passions together;" Jill Stalpes, Director of Development for Foundation for Dreams, "the running community has always done great things for charity and I'm happy the Sarasota Marathon... selected Dream Oaks Camp and Foundation for Dreams..." The monies raised will help send many special needs children to camp whose families may not otherwise be able to afford it. Another beneficiary, The Wellness Community®, is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to providing free support and education as well as hope to people affected by cancer. Through participation in professionally led support groups, educational workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and mind/body classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation, and restore hope regardless of the stage of their disease. Today, there are 22 Wellness Communities across the United States, five in development, 28 satellites, two centers abroad in Tokyo and Tel Aviv, and a community online at The Virtual Wellness Community. Strides For Hope is a charity marathon training team for which participants raise money for The Wellness Community®, in exchange for receiving a comprehensive training program to help them prepare to participate in a marathon or half marathon. Strides for Hope selects the marathon destination and pays for the travel-related expenses. For more details or information, click here.
